The jacket of this entrancing biography conflates two photographs to present one perfect whole: the ideal husband and his perfect family. Pretty, large-eyed Constance, dressed in the soft aesthetic style she helped to make fashionable, is embraced by the older of the couple’s two small sons. Oscar, sporting a new short haircut and sober buttoned-up jacket, looks gravely at the camera. He holds aloft an unlit cigarette. Visiting the Wildes’ smart Chelsea home on Christmas day, 1888 (the year before these photographs were taken), WB Yeats noted a life of perfect harmony that suggested, nevertheless, “some deliberate artistic composition”. Happy Birthday, Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde, born 16 October 1854, died 30 November 1900

Wilde was an Irish writer and poet who became one of London’s most popular playwrights in the 1890s. He is remembered for his epigrams and plays, and his imprisonment, followed by his early death. Wilde was popular with influential contemporaries including George Bernard Shaw, Walt Whitman, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Wilde married Constance Lloyd, and had two sons. In 1891, he met Lord Alfred Douglas ‘Bosie’. They started a relationship that led to Wilde’s fall from grace. He was imprisoned for two years for ‘gross indecency’ for homosexual acts. After his release from prison, Wilde wrote Ballad of Reading Gaol, which included these words:

Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword!

Wilde went to Paris, penniless, and died there of meningitis on 30 November 1900.

Colin Firth will take part in Rupert Everett’s movie Oscar Wilde biopic ‘The Happy Prince’ as the legendary Irish writer’s friend and confidant Reginald “Reggie” Turner.

Colin Firth will take part in Rupert Everett’s Oscar Wilde biopic ‘The Happy Prince’.

Rupert confirmed the Oscar-winning star has agreed to take part in the movie - which he has written and will star in and direct - and while he is currently waiting for financing, he is hopeful it will all come together.

He said: “I’m trying to scrabble together the money. Colin Firth is going to do it, he has to be in it. So that’s going to be good.

“I think directing and playing Oscar will be very difficult - I wrote it as well, it’s going to be pretty hard. But lots of actors do direct and act themselves and I feel it is a subject that I really know very well so hopefully it’s all going to come together.”

The movie tells the tale of the later life of the gay writer, who was imprisoned in Victorian Britain, and Rupert believes it will tell “one of the great romantic stories” of the era.

Speaking on ITV1’s ‘This Morning’, he added: “I have wanted to do a film about the last few years of the life of Oscar Wilde. The films about Oscar Wilde you always see seem to stop just as he goes to prison, partly because the world has now come to terms with him and cannot even face itself because people were so horrible to him afterwards.

“It’s a marvellous story, I think one of the great romantic stories of the 19th century.”
